Daniel Tosh Asheville Concert reviews
Not quite what I was expecting...
Perhaps I missed it somewhere in the description - maybe there was some fine print I didn't read - but what I thought I was going to see was a Daniel Tosh comedy show...and by that I mean a typical comedy show where an opening act (or 2) does short routines, then the headliner comes on and does a full set, usually around an hour.
That is not that kinda show.
This is more of a "showcase" type of show, where Tosh plays the "MC" of sorts for 4 other comedians (all writers/actors affiliated with his show).
Tosh came out first and did about 15 minutes or so, then introduced the first comic (can't recall his name, I believe he was credited as being the co-creator of Tosh.0). Then Tosh comes back out, does another 10-15 minute set, then introduces the 2nd comic (Ian Edwards, I think), and so on. Veteran comedian Todd Glass went third and was followed by wildman Greg Hahn.
All in all it was a decent night - each of these guys were pretty funny, and no two of them had the same style or delivery (Hahn, you know what I'm talking about). It's just that...
It wasn't a Daniel Tosh show.
It wasn't him up there on stage for a full, uninterrupted set.
If you're a Tosh fan you know how many of his jokes go off on long tangents or extended tirades - you can't chop up his show into bits & pieces and expect it to be the same.
I should point out that all of the standup he did do was hilarious. True to form, he didn't hold back on any subject matter - including shaming the audience right away for not laughing hard enough at something (I think he said "Lighten up Bible Belters - it's gonna get worse!"). He also took a few good jabs at LSU football - which around here can be a dicey undertaking - but Tosh was his usual assertive and unapologetic self.
Bottom line: we had a good time, but it was most definitely NOT what we were expecting.
If I had it to do over again, and knew what it was going to be, would I go? Maybe, but only in some cheap seats - definitely not worth paying all that extra money to be up close to comics you've never heard of.
